For students aiming to explore the scholarly aspects of law through extensive research and writing, Suffolk Law provides a Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD) program. Comparable to a PhD in other disciplines, the SJD represents the highest level of law degree attainable, demanding consistent academic achievement along with prior completion of both a JD and LLM.
Suffolk Law's SJD program is an intellectually demanding curriculum designed to stretch students' perspectives and advance legal scholarship. Participants benefit from mentorship by seasoned professionals and immersion in a community of influential legal thinkers. Admission to the SJD program requires candidates to produce a comprehensive, publishable dissertation that offers innovative insights to legal scholarship for degree completion.
Advance your legal education, discover fresh perspectives, and achieve your professional ambitions in the field of law.
Labor and employment law encompasses the extensive legal framework governing interactions between employers, employees, and labor organizations, along with their respective rights and obligations.
The field of Labor and Employment Law (LEL) incorporates three key legal areas: principles governing fundamental employer-employee relationships (including employment-at-will doctrines and termination disputes), specialized statutory regulations for individual employment scenarios (covering anti-discrimination laws, workplace safety regulations, compensation systems, and benefit structures), and legislation pertaining to union activities and collective bargaining agreements.
Beyond classroom instruction, LEL-focused students are highly encouraged to pursue externships and summer employment opportunities to refine their skills and improve job prospects. Our students regularly secure semester-long externships and summer placements in this practice area. Engagement with law journals (particularly through publishing Notes or Comments on LEL subjects) and participation in advocacy competitions is also strongly recommended.
