With over 500 federally recognized tribes and at least 35 states hosting sovereign tribal nations, the need for legal experts specializing in Tribal Law continues to expand.
This program focuses on three fundamental aspects of Native American law: Tribal Law, Federal Indian Law, and how state law interacts with these systems. Students examine diverse subjects such as Tribal civil and criminal jurisdiction, sovereignty, natural resources management, tribal economic development, and more.
Students in Native Law can specialize in economic development, family law, governance, or natural resources management. Ranked among the top 50 U.S. law schools for public interest and clinical programs, the college provides hands-on learning through nine legal-aid clinics, an intensive pro bono program, the Native American Law Student Association, and the Native American Law Emphasis Externship. Opportunities include working with tribal governments or courts, supporting private firms on Native Law cases, or interning at federal agencies addressing Native American legal matters.
