When policies and practices negatively impact communities, sociologists work to analyze and transform the underlying social factors—particularly for marginalized groups including people of color, immigrants, low-income families, women, young people, and LGBTQ+ communities. As a sociology student, you can contribute to this transformative work.
Our experiential curriculum explores interpersonal relationships and societal influences on wellbeing. By cultivating critical thinking about human behavior, systemic inequities, and institutional frameworks, you'll gain problem-solving abilities, cultural competence, and global perspectives.
Our program enables students to:
Apply foundational and modern sociological theories to study human relationships and social systems, Acquire tools to promote equity and tackle challenges like crime, bias, and economic hardship, Master various sociological research techniques, Critically evaluate academic studies to become informed interpreters of social data, Enhance written and verbal communication abilities.
The sociology program emphasizes analyzing human behavior and social institutions. You'll investigate societal organization, power dynamics, interpersonal relationships, and issues of fairness and disparity. The curriculum also trains you in research methods—from project conception and design to data collection, analysis, and presentation.
Upperclass students can participate in field practicums working with underserved populations. Our faculty network facilitates internships across Boston-area organizations like courts, youth programs, educational institutions, legal practices, healthcare facilities, crisis intervention services, social agencies, and housing support centers.
