Suffolk provides two distinct routes to becoming a nonlawyer legal professional via our Paralegal Studies program. Often called paralegals or legal assistants, these professionals represent one of the fastest-expanding careers in the U.S. This field presents diverse opportunities for professional growth across various settings, including law firms, corporate environments, and government institutions.
The titles paralegal, legal assistant, and nonlawyer legal professional are used interchangeably. Following the Massachusetts NFPA chapter's guidelines, our undergraduate law program employs the term nonlawyer legal professional in its curriculum. While these professionals cannot practice law autonomously, they serve as crucial team members working under attorney supervision. For those seeking legal careers without pursuing a four-year degree, we offer a two-year Associate of Science in Paralegal Studies.
