Presented in more than 450 locations across the globe, our composition faculty create works spanning diverse styles and approaches, yet consistently avoid imposing personal artistic preferences on students. Even during periods when narrow definitions of academic music prevailed, these instructors never advocated rigid doctrines, welcoming applicants representing a wide stylistic variety. They collectively value strong foundations in both classical theory and cutting-edge musical technologies, while fostering creative partnerships with performers. The department takes particular pride in the strong connections between student composers and our extensive graduate performance community. A longstanding commitment to contemporary music permeates the department, promoting meaningful collaboration among performers, composers, and music scholars. The culminating requirement for the Composition MA is a portfolio of original works. Students prepare through comprehensive training in Western classical theory (including musicianship, counterpoint, and analysis), music technology, orchestration, specialized composition courses, and regular participation in Composers Forum discussions. Weekly private composition lessons form a core component of the program. Following an open studio approach, students may work with multiple faculty members throughout their studies.
