The Department of Mathematics within the College of Arts and Sciences provides graduate programs culminating in an M.A. in Mathematics (with a Secondary Teacher track), a standard M.A. in Mathematics, and a Ph.D. in Mathematics. National rankings, including those from U.S. News and World Report's Best Graduate Schools, consistently place the department's Ph.D. program within the top 20 nationwide, with certain specialties like Geometry ranking among the top five. Collaborative partnerships with the Simons Center for Geometry and Physics and the Institute for Mathematical Sciences significantly strengthen the department's research and teaching objectives. Although these institutes operate independently, their faculty occasionally teach courses or advise students through the department. Ph.D. candidates may also opt to pursue the Professional Option MA degree, which alone prepares graduates for various career paths, including community college instruction.
