The fundamental degree criteria for students in this program align with those for physics students in general. Typically, students will receive guidance to enroll in one or more chemical physics courses. While the written portion of the preliminary (comprehensive) exam matches that of other physics students, the oral component generally focuses on chemical physics topics. With approval from both program chairs, students may select their research advisor from participating faculty across the collaborating programs. The Department of Physics and Astronomy within the College of Arts and Sciences provides academic programs and research opportunities primarily leading to a Ph.D. The M.A. degree serves either as a final qualification or as a stepping stone toward the Ph.D. For those focused on physical research instrumentation, the Master of Science in Scientific Instrumentation program is available. Additionally, the School of Professional Development offers a Master of Arts in Teaching program for aspiring high school physics educators.
