The Chemistry Department, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Arts in Teaching Chemistry, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Candidates pursuing the M.A.T. must enroll through the School of Professional Development. Doctoral students can select dissertation topics across various chemistry specializations aligned with faculty expertise or opt for interdisciplinary research supervised by faculty from other departments. Collaborative initiatives with multiple programs are available, featuring optional focus areas in chemical physics and chemical biology.
Stony Brook's proximity to Brookhaven National Laboratory—just 15 miles away—offers exceptional access to the National Synchrotron Light Source for cutting-edge chemistry research. This facility houses unparalleled equipment generating high-intensity X-ray and vacuum ultraviolet radiation. Ongoing studies utilize soft X-rays (100-1000 eV photon energy) to examine core electron excitation and relaxation in molecules. Since core electrons like carbon's 1s electrons are strongly bound to specific atoms, the excitation energy concentrates on individual atomic sites within molecules. This atomic-level precision enables photochemical reactions with significantly greater site specificity than valence electron excitation using visible or ultraviolet light.
