Biomedical engineers create innovative devices and tools that enhance patient care and assist doctors in diagnosing and treating medical conditions. These include fully implantable hearts, pacemakers, defibrillators, imaging systems, artificial limbs, replacement components, portable ECG units, and cardiopulmonary bypass machines.

Stevens' biomedical engineering program offers a comprehensive, interdisciplinary education that covers core mathematics, science, and engineering principles alongside biological sciences, human physiology, and the interaction between engineered materials and living tissues.

Throughout this program, students engage in robust design coursework culminating in a senior capstone project where teams conceptualize, develop, and evaluate medical devices. Students gain hands-on research experience working alongside faculty on advanced projects in fields such as biorobotics, neural interfaces, spinal implants, respiratory biomechanics, emergency medicine (in partnership with Hoboken University Medical Center), and regenerative medicine.
Our interdisciplinary program prepares graduates for diverse career paths in biotechnology, medical school admission, or advanced academic pursuits. Stevens biomedical engineering students receive training in fundamental STEM disciplines while studying biological systems and material-tissue interactions. The curriculum emphasizes practical design work and intensive lab experience with biological systems. The BME degree incorporates core engineering coursework shared across disciplines, featuring eight semesters of design instruction. The final three semesters focus on specialized biomedical projects, with the last two dedicated to the Capstone Design initiative—a collaborative medical device development project. Senior design teams typically receive guidance from multiple advisors, including Stevens faculty and partnering medical professionals.
