The Department of Economics and Stanford Law School provide a dual-degree program allowing students to earn either a J.D. alongside an M.A. in Economics or a J.D. with a Ph.D. in Economics. The program also includes shorter law options for economics graduate students, offering master's-level nonprofessional degrees instead of J.D.s. The J.D./M.A. and J.D./Ph.D. tracks cater to those pursuing careers at the intersection of law and economics. Applicants must secure separate admission to both the Law School and Economics Department, then obtain approval from both to pursue the joint degree. Candidates should indicate their interest in the joint program on their applications, which admission committees may consider. Current students in either program can later apply to join the other and request joint-degree status. Students may start their studies in either the Law School or Economics Department, with faculty advisors from both areas guiding their academic path. Full-time enrollment in the Law School is mandatory during the first year, and students may need to dedicate one or more quarters primarily to economics coursework at some point in the program, regardless of their current enrollment status.
Applicants from colleges and universities of recognized standing who hold a U.S. bachelor's degree or its equivalent are eligible to be considered for admission for graduate study. English Proficiency: TOEFL - Your minimum score must be 100 (internet based) OR 600 (paper based).
