The doctoral program in computational music theory and acoustics is provided by the Music Department via the Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA, said as "karma"). This interdisciplinary hub draws PhD candidates from various academic units including Computer Science (CS), Electrical Engineering (EE), Mechanical Engineering (ME), and Psychology (PSYCH). Although all CCRMA faculty members are primarily affiliated with the Music Department, Julius Smith maintains an additional appointment in EE, allowing him to act as principal thesis advisor for electrical engineering doctoral students.
