The Stanford Biophysics Program is a cross-disciplinary, multi-departmental initiative that awards a Ph.D. in biophysics. This program focuses on interpreting biological processes through physical and chemical frameworks. Faculty members from 16 departments across Humanities and Sciences, Medicine, Engineering, and the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory contribute to the program. Research spans two interconnected biophysics domains: employing physical/chemical techniques to address biological challenges and innovating new methodologies. The program educates students in quantitative biological analysis while cultivating their ability to identify cutting-edge research questions. Customized academic plans accommodate students' varied backgrounds, requiring advanced coursework in physical/biological sciences, seminar participation, and demonstrated excellence in independent research. Key biophysics disciplines within the program include macromolecular function studies, computational biology, single-molecule investigations, and structural biology.
