The Biophysics Graduate Group offers an interdisciplinary PhD program under the California Institute for the Biosciences (QB3). This initiative prepares students for professional paths bridging biological and physical sciences. Participants can pursue doctoral studies in Biophysics through this collaborative program. Over 60 faculty members from various UC Berkeley departments and research groups contribute to the Biophysics Group. Candidates have the flexibility to conduct research with any participating faculty advisor.
Prospective biophysics graduate students usually complete undergraduate studies in fundamental physical or biological sciences. During their initial two years at UC Berkeley, they customize their coursework, selecting classes in biology, physics, and chemistry to strengthen their foundational understanding.
Applicants admitted to a doctoral program that requires a master’s degree to be earned at Berkeley as a prerequisite (even though the applicant already has a master’s degree from another institution in the same or a closely allied field of study) will be permitted to undertake the second master’s degree, despite the overlap in field.
