Stanford's Department of Music integrates musical performance with academic exploration across diverse fields including composition, conducting, music history, ethnomusicology, music theory, cognitive science, multimedia arts, and digital technologies. The Music undergraduate program offers a curriculum that balances wide-ranging musical exposure with specialized focus areas, equipping students with diverse skills for their artistic and musical development. This comprehensive approach incorporates theoretical study, performance practice, historical context, cultural perspectives, technological applications, and scientific inquiry to establish a robust foundation for all music majors.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
