An in-depth exploration of Italian literature and cultures, creating a strong foundation for advanced studies in literature or history. The program delivers rigorous instruction in French and/or Italian literary history, theory, and analysis, while the Department has consistently pioneered interdisciplinary connections between literature and broader fields like philosophy, anthropology, scientific history, and cultural studies. Course options are thoughtfully designed to serve both undergraduate and graduate students, including majors and non-majors. The French and Italian undergraduate programs offer thorough examinations of their respective literary traditions and cultural contexts, preparing students for future academic pursuits in these disciplines.
A high school diploma or the equivalent is required in order to enroll at Stanford. Generally, we receive English proficiency exam results (TOEFL, IELTS, Duolingo English Test, etc.) from applicants whose native language is not English and/or the primary language of instruction at their secondary school is not English.
