The Department of Spanish and Portuguese provides undergraduate and graduate programs, including a B.A. in Spanish with specializations in Literature and Culture, Spanish for Future Educators, and Cinema Studies focusing on Spain, Latin America, and U.S. Latino communities, along with M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in Spanish.
Learners enhance their Spanish language abilities in listening, reading, speaking, and writing while developing analytical skills, sociocultural understanding, and cross-cultural competencies applicable to diverse professional and academic paths. For those pursuing interdisciplinary studies, the Spanish B.A. program facilitates combining with another major, especially beneficial for aspiring K-12 educators, including those in dual language programs. The curriculum consists of five required foundational courses and seven electives. Graduates of the Spanish major will achieve these key learning objectives:
Students effectively communicate ideas and perspectives in Spanish through both speech and writing, demonstrating mastery of grammar, appropriate language levels, and stylistic elements.
Students critically examine literary and cinematic works from Spanish-speaking creators, contextualizing them within their historical and sociopolitical frameworks.
Students recognize and explain linguistic characteristics (such as phonetics, syntax, and language acquisition) across Spanish-speaking regions, considering dialectal and situational differences.
Students differentiate and articulate cultural traditions and diverse viewpoints from Spanish-speaking societies (encompassing Iberian, Latin American, and U.S. Latino communities).
