Communication serves as the foundation for how people structure society, shape identities, and interpret shared understanding. Mastering effective communication skills and recognizing others' communicative abilities are vital for both personal growth and career advancement. The Communication Studies program at St. John's College of Liberal Arts & Sciences equips students with theoretical knowledge and practical techniques for impactful communication.

A Communication Studies degree examines how people employ verbal and nonverbal symbols to share information, convince others, build relationships, and resolve conflicts across diverse cultural and situational contexts. This program helps students refine their communication approaches, enabling them to craft, assess, and convey messages effectively—whether in routine interactions or high-stakes scenarios—preparing them to guide and inspire others throughout their professional, personal, and community engagements.

The Communication Studies Department provides an extensive curriculum to cultivate communication proficiency in political, legal, workplace, organizational, interpersonal, and cross-cultural environments. Students explore courses that establish a solid grounding in communication principles, practical applications, critical analysis, and historical perspectives. They develop into principled communicators, acquiring the skills to engage in public discourse by assessing disputes, offering insightful perspectives on social interactions, and appreciating diverse ways of experiencing and interpreting the world.

Communication Studies majors complete core coursework in communication methods before focusing on one of three specialized tracks: Communication & Culture, Organizational Communication & Leadership, or Political Communication & Civic Engagement.
