The Cinema Studies undergraduate program provides a liberal arts education centered on analyzing film as both an artistic medium and a cultural phenomenon. Examining cinema as art involves exploring how visual style, storytelling techniques, and production methods interact within the medium. As cultural study, the program investigates how movies reflect societal norms and act as indicators of social transformation. Though American films receive significant attention, the curriculum equally emphasizes European, Asian, and South American cinema.

Program graduates can pursue their degrees in two directions: as traditional liberal arts education similar to English degrees, or as career preparation. Department requirements include pairing the cinema studies major with either a minor or second major in another field. Our alumni have established successful careers in various fields including film preservation, education, media journalism, digital content creation, television production, and movie direction.
