The writing specialization program at SIUE explores essential theoretical, institutional, and practical considerations in writing instruction today.
Participants will gain:
Insight into the rich historical evolution of writing education.
Familiarity with fundamental teaching methodologies.
Guidance from expert faculty in examining current critical issues.
Recent specialized course offerings have included:
Equitable writing evaluation approaches
Teaching for social change
Literacy as a fundamental human right
Graduates will be equipped to instruct college composition courses, thoughtfully analyze writing curricula and literacy concepts, and, for certified secondary educators, qualify to teach advanced placement or dual-enrollment writing classes. Many students leverage their acquired expertise to share insights at academic conferences nationwide.
We strongly recommend full-time candidates apply for our selective graduate teaching assistantships, providing hands-on experience in introductory composition instruction with faculty mentorship.
