This program strengthens students' technical abilities to examine, assess, and solve environmental problems by exploring their causes, consequences, and potential solutions. At SIUE, the graduate program fosters professional growth and expands career prospects across diverse environmental fields. Students benefit from guidance and instruction provided by faculty across multiple College of Arts and Sciences departments, supplemented by insights from industry professionals. Strong partnerships with environmental organizations and businesses allow students and faculty to integrate practical challenges into academic work and research. Participants engage in rigorous environmental research projects connected to campus initiatives, community needs, corporate settings, government agencies, consulting practices, and advocacy organizations. The department boasts extensive analytical equipment, including atomic absorption spectrometers, ICP-MS instruments, GIS computing resources, various chromatographic systems, mass spectrometers, nanoparticle analyzers, elemental analyzers, and specialized sampling gear for air, water, and soil analysis. The program also maintains multiple field research locations for long-term environmental monitoring, featuring innovative experimental filter strips and restored native prairie ecosystems.
