The graduate programs offer specialized training for careers in teaching and performance. Applicants must pass placement tests in music theory and history/literature (or complete the review courses MUS 500a, b) and may need to audition, depending on their chosen specialization. Certificate programs cater particularly to educators looking to enhance their professional qualifications. It's common for students to work toward a certificate simultaneously with an MM degree, with some coursework applying to both programs. The music field is highly competitive, with the best career opportunities going to those who refine their performance techniques or teaching methodologies.
Alongside core music requirements, the curriculum features eight credit hours in the primary performance area and two to six hours in music history. Piano performance students must complete at least four credits of MUS 565 (Advanced Piano Ensemble - Accompanying and Chamber Music). Jazz performance students are required to take four credits of MUS 566 (Instrumental Ensemble) plus two credits of MUS 509 (Advanced Jazz Arranging/Composition). Voice, choral conducting, and piano students focusing on chamber music/accompanying must complete MUS 539 (Advanced Diction - two credits). Choral conducting students additionally need four credits of MUS 540Q (Applied Voice).
