SIUE's theory and composition program equips students with hands-on experience in crafting original music while deepening their comprehension of musical principles and structures. Beyond foundational coursework, students pursuing this specialization enroll in advanced classes covering analysis, arranging, and contemporary music, complemented by personalized composition instruction. Throughout their four-year journey, students develop a professional portfolio through close collaboration with faculty and visiting artists, with regular opportunities to showcase their works through live performances. All music theory and composition courses are led by dedicated full-time faculty, with composition instruction delivered through individualized professor-student sessions. This program is designed to ready students for either graduate studies or direct career entry, boasting an exceptional placement record. The comprehensive curriculum focuses on essential elements like form, harmony, orchestration, notation, and musicianship, applicable across all musical styles—from classical repertoire to film and video game scoring. Alumni have pursued advanced degrees at renowned institutions including Michigan State University, Florida State University, and the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory, while others have secured positions such as arranger for The Muny in St. Louis, educators in school music programs, or independent music professionals.
