Wherever people exist, music follows - spanning continents and centuries. At W&M, you'll discover how to both make music and understand its role in human culture.
The Music Department provides a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music. We approach music education through its interconnected fields:
Ethnomusicology examines music within cultural frameworks.
Our program draws diverse students. You might be a dedicated music scholar pursuing a major or minor. Perhaps you'll undertake independent research. Or maybe you'll participate simply for the pleasure of making and enjoying music.
Music enhances life and should be accessible to all. Enrollment in our program isn't necessary to take music lessons, join ensembles, or enroll in beginner courses. Our concerts welcome all attendees, and if you're not performing, we'd love to have you in the audience.
No auditions are needed for W&M's music program. However, we recommend applicants supplement their Common Application with an Arts Submission, including a music background summary and a statement about your planned involvement in our classes, private instruction, and performance groups.
