The School of Education, Health and Human Behavior's revamped secondary education program emphasizes anti-racism and social justice principles. Aligned with Illinois' updated teaching standards, this initiative incorporates the recently introduced Culturally Responsive Teacher and Leader Standards, supporting the state's goal to match teacher demographics with K-12 student populations within four years.
Aspiring educators seeking a 9-12 Professional Educator License receive comprehensive training through Arts and Sciences content courses combined with pedagogical instruction and hands-on field experiences from the School of Education. Most Arts and Sciences majors pursuing licensure can choose between two career tracks: their primary field of study or education. Both national and state labor projections (U.S. Bureau of Education and Illinois State Board of Education) indicate favorable job prospects for high school educators from 2016-2026. Like all SIUE teacher preparation programs, this secondary education track maintains an outstanding reputation for developing highly skilled educators, with graduates teaching in Illinois, Missouri, and across the country.
