Interior designers enhance the practicality, safety, and visual appeal of indoor environments. They possess knowledge of construction regulations, accessibility guidelines, and blueprint interpretation. They curate aesthetics by selecting color schemes, lighting fixtures, furnishings, and decor elements.

The program teaches spatial analysis techniques, functional space evaluation, and design planning using professional tools. You'll gain experience presenting concepts to clients and collaborating with architects and builders. These competencies lead to diverse opportunities within the interior design field.

The initial curriculum for both Interior Design and Architectural Studies programs is identical for the first two years. This foundational approach broadens professional flexibility. Many advanced technical courses also follow a shared curriculum, fostering a cooperative, cross-disciplinary learning environment for students and instructors alike.

Our educational philosophy emphasizes practical experience. Campus resources include a comprehensive woodworking facility, digital fabrication laboratory, and large-format printing services. Students can apply their knowledge by participating in national contests - SIU has achieved top-ten placements in the Steelcase NEXT Design Competition three times in recent years.
