The Communication Disorders and Sciences (CDS) program focuses on speech-language pathology. These specialists are trained experts who analyze human communication, its growth, and related impairments. They assess speech patterns, language abilities, cognitive-communication functions, and swallowing capabilities in individuals of all ages to identify issues and develop appropriate therapies. CDS students explore typical communication processes alongside diagnostic and therapeutic methods for communication challenges.
This program prepares future speech-language pathologists and audiologists, offering both undergraduate and graduate science degrees that combine theoretical learning with hands-on practice. The bachelor's curriculum provides comprehensive foundational knowledge for pursuing advanced studies, while professionals in these fields work on diagnosing, treating, and investigating communication difficulties. Sadly, numerous Americans experience various communication impairments.
Individuals with speech, language, vocal, or fluency conditions (such as stuttering) may benefit from speech-language pathologists' care. Aspiring pathologists should consider completing both our undergraduate and graduate programs. Those with hearing difficulties might seek help from audiologists. While our undergraduate program serves as a starting point for audiology careers, students must pursue graduate studies elsewhere since SIUC doesn't offer advanced audiology degrees.
