The Musical Theater program's goal is to provide small classes with personalized coaching in singing, dancing, ear and voice development, acting, and movement. This rigorous yet supportive environment encourages artistic growth while refining the skills students bring to SIU.
Pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts in musical theater means diving into the performing arts alongside faculty with diverse professional backgrounds. We cultivate emerging artists, preparing them to launch thriving careers in musical theater with confidence and experience.
Graduates gain advanced technical skills in singing, dancing, and acting, coupled with deep insight into performing arts interpretation and development. Alongside technical training, students enjoy numerous chances to showcase their talents in formal productions.
This specialized program blends hands-on training with academic study, covering essentials like harmony fundamentals, theatrical voice, stage makeup, actor movement, directing, musical theater dance, and audition strategies. Analytical coursework explores play interpretation, directing, theater history, and dramatic literature.
Over eight semesters, faculty track each student's growth through live performances. Both solo and group work showcase progress in acting, dance, vocals, and physical expression. Theoretical knowledge is assessed through performance projects, written exams, and oral presentations.
