Geology students can pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree, with the additional option of obtaining a geology minor. The Bachelor of Science track is tailored for those aiming for professional geology careers or graduate studies, while the Bachelor of Arts offers greater flexibility to pair geological studies with other disciplines like law, engineering, biology, business, or education.
The Bachelor of Science program features a rigorous set of required courses and maintains strong competitiveness with comparable national programs. A mandatory summer field course, typically completed between junior and senior years, is conducted at the permanent field camp in Montana's Beartooth Mountains near Red Lodge. This facility, operated by the Yellowstone-Bighorn Research Association, is jointly used with several prestigious institutions including the University of Pennsylvania and Princeton University.
SIU geology students enjoy numerous opportunities to enhance their major coursework through complementary studies, minors, or even dual majors in related fields. Aspiring environmental lawyers can combine geology with pre-law studies, potentially continuing to SIU's School of Law. The geology curriculum also pairs well with studies in physics, chemistry, engineering disciplines, computer science, environmental sciences, geography, or life sciences - all available within SIU's diverse academic offerings.
