This groundbreaking initiative aims to increase both the quantity and variety of mental health professionals in Washington state, including counselors, social workers, and therapists serving those with serious mental health or substance use issues. The program offers grants of up to $51,500 for graduate students in social work and counseling programs at 13 partner universities statewide, in exchange for service at qualifying community behavioral health or tribal organizations. Our Advanced Clinical MSW program, with its strong social justice orientation and community focus, provides ideal preparation for this workforce development effort. The curriculum combines social justice theory, mental health assessment and intervention, and policy studies with two years of practice courses emphasizing anti-oppressive approaches. Small class sizes and instructors with real-world clinical experience enhance the learning environment. WDI participants receive guidance from a dedicated faculty advisor with expertise in community behavioral health.
