Students enrolled full-time can finish both degrees faster since the program allows certain courses from the Institute of Public Service in the College of Arts and Sciences to apply toward the law degree, while selected law school courses count toward the MPA. Part-time students also have access to this dual degree option. Seattle University's combined public administration and law program gives students the flexibility to begin their first year either at the Institute of Public Service (IPS) or the School of Law, with no option to switch programs during that initial year. The second year is spent in the alternate school (for instance, starting with law means moving to public administration next year). The final two or more years blend coursework from both IPS and the law school.
Because IPS follows a quarter system and the law school uses semesters, students must work closely with the School of Law's associate dean for students and the IPS director to create and get approval for their customized schedules.
