Seattle offers an exceptional environment for studying environmental science. As one of the fastest expanding urban areas in the U.S., it sits along the shores of Puget Sound, a globally significant estuary. However, rapid development and environmental pressures have taken a toll on the region's ecosystems. Protecting this distinctive natural legacy remains one of the area's most pressing concerns. Fortunately, various government bodies, research institutions, and private organizations are actively working to preserve these delicate ecosystems. The city serves as a major center for environmental research, creating abundant prospects for SU students during their studies and after graduation, whether they join resource management agencies, environmental consulting firms, or pursue advanced degrees.

Core Scientific Knowledge: Utilize concepts from biology, ecology, chemistry, physics, geology, math, and engineering to analyze the Pacific Northwest's ecosystems and environmental issues within a worldwide framework. Research Methods: Design and execute safe field and laboratory studies that consider the complex spatial and temporal dynamics of natural systems. Analytical Skills: Formulate and assess scientific hypotheses through rigorous analysis and modern techniques. Effective Communication: Clearly convey technical information to diverse audiences through written and spoken presentations supported by scientific evidence and visual data representations. Policy Applications: Assess how scientific findings can shape policies tackling environmental challenges like species decline, contamination, resource scarcity, and global warming. Collaborative Work: Participate in cross-disciplinary teams that combine scientific knowledge with community input to solve environmental issues.
