Politics encompasses the collective decision-making processes that shape our shared existence. While we often associate it with politicians, parties, institutions, and legislation, its scope extends far beyond these elements. Political dynamics unfold everywhere - from government halls to workplaces, classrooms, homes, and public spaces. It involves negotiating competing interests and values, fostering cooperation or managing conflicts among groups, and determining resource allocation within societies. This field addresses both the mechanisms of group decision-making and the pursuit of equitable social structures, while also examining power dynamics. Political science systematically analyzes the core principles, stakeholders, methods, and fundamental concepts involved in these processes. Scholars in this discipline investigate essential human concerns like authority, fairness, parity, and governance legitimacy. They analyze policy formation and implementation domestically and globally, compare governmental systems and their outcomes internationally, study global cooperation and competition patterns, and reveal how power imbalances among individuals, communities, nations, and regions influence our world. Essentially, any matter affecting people falls within political science's purview.
Seattle University's Political Science Department provides instruction in political theory, American government, legal studies, cross-national political analysis, global affairs, economic policy systems, and examinations of identity factors including race, gender, sexuality, and socioeconomic status. Our program equips students with professional skills, leadership capabilities, and civic awareness. Graduates frequently pursue advanced degrees in law or other fields. Our alumni community holds positions across various sectors including municipal and federal agencies, nonprofit groups, legal practices, and diverse public and private sector roles.
