Seattle Central College's Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Food Systems program equips students and community members with expertise in agroecology, natural resource stewardship, and environmental conservation. Focusing on organic urban farming in western Washington, this program prepares individuals to oversee sustainable production systems that form the foundation of robust, fair, and community-based food networks through these academic pathways:
Sustainable Urban Agriculture and Food Systems Associate of Science Transfer: Track 1 (AS-T: Track 1) Degree (minimum 107 credits)
Program graduates will gain the ability to:
Explain ecological foundations governing agroecosystems across various scales, highlighting how plant biodiversity and soil characteristics influence both natural environments and human communities.
Cultivate regionally suitable vegetables, shrubs, and trees by understanding their specific growth needs within diverse planting systems including intercropping, sequential planting, crop cycles, and extended growing seasons.
Utilize agroecological and permaculture approaches to address urban farming challenges, creating comprehensive micro-farm strategies and business models spanning from seed propagation to local market distribution.
An allied health background, demonstrated in one of the following ways:
A certificate of at least 10 credits in an allied health field from a regionally accredited institution
An AAS–T / AAS degree in an allied health field from a regionally accredited institution
A state–issued credential in an allied health field
At least 1 year of work experience in an allied health field
An associate's degree from a regionally accredited college or university with at least a 2.5 overall GPA.
Acceptable degrees include the following: Associate of Applied Science–Transfer (AAS–T) or Associate of Science (AAS) degree in an Allied Health field, Associate of Arts (AA), Associate of Science (AS), Associate in Business (AB), Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BS) degree.
English Proficiency:
TOEFL iBT 64, writing 17
IELTS 6.0, writing 5.0
TOEFL PBT* 507, writing 4.0
U.S. high school graduation with GPA of at least 2.0
Completion of English Composition at an accredited post-secondary institution in Australia, Canada (English-speaking provinces), Ireland, Kenya, New Zealand, United Kingdom, United States, or Zimbabwe
