SAIC's Performance Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago was established with an innovative approach, standing out nationally as one of the few dedicated contemporary performance art programs within an art school, offering both undergraduate and graduate studies centered on performance practice and research.
The department constantly adapts to emerging trends within and beyond the discipline, striving to reflect evolving 21st-century perspectives from both educators' and learners' viewpoints.

Our performance program merges hands-on studio work with thorough critical analysis and historical context to shape artistic decisions and creative output. This cross-disciplinary method draws from diverse performance forms such as live acts, installation-based performances, movement exploration, tactical interventions, site-specific works, digital interactivity, and experimental writing.

We motivate students to approach their artistic practice as a fluid, interdisciplinary endeavor that can intersect with multiple departments like Fiber and Material Studies, Sculpture, Fashion Design, Art & Technology/Sound Practices, Film, Video, New Media, Animation, and Ceramics.
