The United States, California, and the Santa Barbara region boast a diverse population with varied ethnic, racial, and cultural origins. This rich tapestry forms what's known as the American Mosaic. The American Ethnic Studies Department explores the histories, achievements, and challenges of these communities, with particular focus on African American, Chicano, and Indigenous cultures. The department maintains that by understanding others' cultural legacies, individuals can develop deeper appreciation for their own heritage.
