The Master of Science in Meteorology equips students for advanced professional roles, independent research, and further academic pursuits in atmospheric sciences. The program combines rigorous graduate-level coursework in theoretical and applied meteorology with a significant research component, culminating in a master's thesis that completes the degree requirements. At SJSU, the Department of Meteorology and Climate Science hosts one of the university's most dynamic research initiatives. Faculty members bring diverse expertise, fostering extensive research across multiple specialties. Their focus areas encompass Weather Analysis and Forecasting, Fire Weather, Urban Meteorology and Air Pollution, Planetary Atmospheres, Tropical Meteorology, Radar and Satellite Remote Sensing, Cloud and Aerosol Physics, Atmospheric Dynamics, Meteorological Data Processing, Data Communications, and Data Acquisition and Display.
Applicants must: Possess the equivalent of an SJSU BS in Meteorology or, with the approval of the department graduate committee, a degree in a physical science or mathematics. Students entering with degrees in other areas may be admitted to conditionally classified standing and will be required to make up deficiencies (e.g., in meteorology and math) before enrolling in the core graduate classes; Have earned minimum GPA of 2.75 (on a scale of 0-4) in their BS degrees.
English Language Proficiency: IELTS: 6.5; TOEFL – 80 (IBT), paper based – 550, Computer based – 213; Pearson Test of English (PTE) – 53. GRE General test required.
