The Bachelor of Science program, provided by the Department of Environmental Studies, equips students for professional roles in fields such as energy and water resource management, biodiversity conservation, aquatic ecosystems, sustainable farming, energy solutions, environmental health and safety, impact evaluations, ecological restoration, and wilderness preservation.
Our department's goal is to equip students with comprehensive interdisciplinary skills to analyze, address, and solve environmental issues. We prioritize fostering an inclusive, diverse, and anti-racist learning environment for every student. Established in 1970, SJSU's Environmental Studies Department was among the nation's pioneering programs, consistently producing skilled environmental professionals. Currently, students gain practical experience through fieldwork, the Center for Development of Recycling, the Environmental Resource Center, and external internships. Graduates pursue careers in impact assessment, ecosystem rehabilitation, clean energy, water policy, sustainability education, eco-friendly agriculture, park administration, policy development, waste reduction, and recycling initiatives. The department provides MS, BS, and BA degrees in Environmental Studies (including a BA with Teacher Preparation) and a BA in Global Studies. This interdisciplinary Global Studies program explores worldwide connections, analyzing links between human migration, trade flows, technology exchange, and ecological shifts. Additionally, we provide various minors, from ecological rehabilitation to renewable energy. Our research-focused MS in Environmental Studies stands out as one of the few such graduate programs nationwide.
