San Jose State University's Photography Program stands as the most extensive within the California State University network and ranks among the largest in the Western U.S. Our program immerses students in varied contemporary photographic techniques, spanning classic silver-based methods and historical alternative processes to cutting-edge digital and video imaging. While focusing on photography as fine art, we uniquely incorporate robust commercial photography training at the undergraduate level. Beyond our fine art focus, the program provides exceptional commercial photography training, setting our undergraduate curriculum apart. Addressing technical, aesthetic, conceptual, and theoretical aspects, a key goal of our Photography program is to develop students' capacity for visualizing sophisticated ideas.
Historically, photography has functioned as a potent tool for personal expression, social transformation, and cultural critique. We inspire students to create impactful work addressing today's pressing concerns. Acknowledging photography's growing interdisciplinary nature, we support students in investigating and combining related media such as installation, film, video, and digital platforms
Students must Earn a high school diploma, or equivalent and earn the equivalent of a U.S. 3.0 grade point average (GPA) or an average of “B” grades. Successfully complete three years of college preparatory mathematics with a minimum grade of “C-” or better.
English Language Requirements: IELTS - 6.0, TOEFL – 61 (IBT), Paper based – 500; Pearson Test of English (PTE) – 44.
