The Bachelor of Arts program, administered by the Department of Environmental Studies, equips students for professional paths in coastal resource stewardship, environmental journalism, policy and regulation, comprehensive waste solutions, human-environment interactions, and sustainable planning.
Our department's core purpose is to arm students with cross-disciplinary skills to analyze, administer, and solve ecological issues. We dedicate ourselves to delivering an education that embraces diversity, multicultural perspectives, and anti-racist principles. Pioneering in its field, SJSU's Environmental Studies Department has been awarding degrees and shaping environmental experts since 1970. Currently, students gain practical experience through fieldwork, the Recycling Development Center, the Environmental Resource Hub, and external internships. Graduates pursue diverse roles in ecological impact analysis, ecosystem rehabilitation, clean energy, water governance, sustainability education, organic farming, park administration, policy development, waste solutions, and recycling initiatives. Our department provides Master of Science, Bachelor of Science, and Bachelor of Arts programs in Environmental Studies (including teacher preparation) plus a BA in Global Studies. This international studies program takes a comprehensive worldview, exploring links between global population movements, trade flows, technology exchange, and ecological transformations. Additionally, we provide various minors for university-wide students, spanning from ecosystem rehabilitation to renewable power. Our Environmental Studies MS stands among the nation's rare research-intensive graduate programs in this discipline.
