The Mechanical Engineering Master of Science program requires 30 semester units, with a minimum of 21 units from graduate-level coursework. Students collaborate with faculty advisors to create tailored curriculum plans that balance academic challenge with individual goals. The program consists of 6 mandatory engineering units and at least 9 elective engineering units. With advisor approval, up to 6 elective non-engineering units may count toward degree requirements if aligned with the student's academic focus. For the final requirement, students choose between two paths: completing 3-6 research units (ENGR 897, repeatable once) plus a 3-unit thesis (ENGR 898), or undertaking a 3-unit applied research project (ENGR 895).
