The Biology Department offers both undergraduate and graduate programs spanning the full spectrum of biological sciences. Curriculum options extend from foundational biology courses to specialized offerings across major biological fields. To guide students, the department has organized courses into focused concentrations that outline suitable study paths for different biology specialties. Every concentration ensures comprehensive exposure to core biological principles while allowing focused study in specific areas. Early consultation with an advisor is recommended to craft a personalized study plan within the chosen concentration.
The SF STATE Biology Department is currently applying for renewal under Prop 14's CIRM EDUC2 RFA initiative. Selected trainees will enroll in the Master of Science in Biomedical Science program, specializing in Stem Cell Science (Science Master's Bridges Program). This specialized program develops skilled laboratory professionals for academic and industry roles, advancing stem cell, gene therapy, and related health technologies. The curriculum includes business coursework, particularly benefiting students targeting biotechnology careers or further academic study. During their first year, CIRM trainees complete foundational stem cell science courses at SF STATE. The second year, supported by CIRM funding, focuses on internship research involving stem cells or gene therapy at Bay Area institutions or partner companies. Upon completing their training, Science Master's Bridges students submit a manuscript-style final project and defend it orally, emerging as fully prepared life science professionals.
