Our Master of Arts program celebrates the vast spectrum of film artistry, from analyzing mainstream media to exploring independent and international cinema, avant-garde works, and digital media innovations like video installations. Faculty members work to expand students' perspectives, both through courses that reflect their varied scholarly pursuits and cinematic passions, and through outside activities—guest lectures by filmmakers and academics, cultural gatherings such as film festivals, and by leveraging San Francisco's vibrant artistic community.
The Cinema Studies M.A. at San Francisco State University enables graduate students to investigate film and media through academic research. We view cinema as encompassing all moving-image formats, spanning from early motion pictures to contemporary digital platforms.

This graduate program focuses not just on film history, theory, and analysis, but on all visual media and their associated critical frameworks. With flexible course options, students can tailor their studies before developing a thesis that demonstrates in-depth investigation of a subject aligned with their academic passions.
