The Post-Secondary Reading Teaching Certificate helps both aspiring and current college educators address professional development needs in literacy education and reading instruction. This program equips participants with specialized skills for teaching roles in community colleges and organizations where reading instruction expertise is valued.
The certificate aligns with updated community college reading instruction standards (Assembly Bill 1725), mandating that new faculty hold either a master's in Education with a reading specialization or a master's in English/ESL plus reading certification.
Current graduate students must complete the English Department's internal application, available in their main office or at english.sfsu.edu, before starting certificate coursework. Non-matriculated applicants must first gain university admission through standard procedures before applying to the composition or reading certificate programs. Prospective students should contact the Graduate Studies Division coordinator for application guidance.
