The Biology Department offers both undergraduate and graduate programs spanning the full spectrum of biological sciences. Curriculum options extend from foundational biology courses to advanced studies across major biological fields. To guide students, the department organizes courses into specialized focus areas that outline suitable academic paths for different biology specialties. Every concentration ensures comprehensive grounding in fundamental biological principles while allowing specialization in particular fields. Prospective students are encouraged to meet with advisors early in their academic journey to craft a personalized study plan within their chosen focus area. All Biology specializations have limited enrollment, requiring initial registration as pre-biology students. After successfully completing (with a C- or higher) two major courses, students may apply for full Biology major status.
The general biology curriculum introduces students to diverse biological disciplines such as genetics, cellular biology, physiology, ecology, and organismal/evolutionary studies. Recognizing that physical science fundamentals underpin many biological theories, the program incorporates physics and chemistry coursework in its foundational requirements. The B.A. track particularly suits those aiming for professional schools (including teaching credential programs) or careers demanding broad biological knowledge.
Aspiring educators should be aware that teaching credential requirements include supplementary science coursework (geosciences breadth covering meteorology, astronomy, geology, and oceanography). Early and regular consultation with the Biology department's credential advisors is crucial for major planning and staying informed about potential state regulation updates.
