The biological sciences, influencing nearly every facet of modern life, are experiencing a remarkable transformation. This program's curriculum equips students with a comprehensive foundation to understand the field's vast diversity and the intricate systems driving biodiversity. Such fundamental biological understanding can address pressing challenges in human health, including microbial communities' role in disease transmission, preserving native flora and fauna ecosystems, and controlling invasive species while managing natural resources.
The program starts with a four-semester biology core, establishing a robust base for all biology majors. During the first year, students explore introductory Biology, covering cellular, molecular, evolutionary, environmental, and organismal concepts while analyzing connections between development, structure, function, and adaptation. The following year delves into Cell Biology, focusing on cellular organization and processes, and Genetics, which explores molecular principles essential to contemporary biology.
In their upper years, students fulfill core requirements while selecting specialized electives aligned with their interests. The curriculum fosters a unified grasp of biological concepts, hands-on laboratory proficiency, and research opportunities. Graduates with a general biology degree can pursue careers from ecology to healthcare, or advance to graduate or professional programs in medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, optometry, pharmacy, or veterinary medicine.
