To earn a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, students must fulfill a 40-unit curriculum that includes 6 units of introductory courses (100 or 200-level or equivalent transfer credits), a 4-unit GWAR writing requirement, 8 upper-division units each in Rhetorical/Performative Communication and Social Context/Interaction, 8 elective units in COMM-prefixed courses, 4 units in Communication Inquiry, and a culminating 2-unit Senior Seminar. Our program explores human communication across diverse settings through interdisciplinary lenses that foster a more compassionate society. Communication shapes identities, builds relationships, examines cultural values, and enables collective action. The department investigates verbal/nonverbal expression, identity formation and transformation, active listening practices, and the relationship between symbols and behavior. We celebrate human diversity while examining communication patterns across different cultural and social environments. Our approach employs multiple methodologies and technologies to generate, disseminate, and critically evaluate communication knowledge. Key focus areas encompass social interaction, group dynamics, organizational communication, interpersonal/intercultural exchanges, political rhetoric, public address, performance studies, and research methods.
