The undergraduate Japanese studies program emphasizes building language skills within cultural contexts through diverse language training classes, along with culture and literature courses taught in Japanese. Beyond core requirements, students can select from numerous electives spanning literature, cultural studies, translation, interpretation, and business Japanese. The MA in Japanese provides two specializations: Teaching Japanese as a Second Language and Practical Language Use. The teaching track equips graduates for university-level Japanese instruction, while the Professional Applications track develops job-specific skills for fields like commerce, public service, arts, translation, and other professional domains. The Japanese degree requires 45 credits across lower- and upper-level courses, with advanced classes primarily taught in Japanese, expecting students to demonstrate proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing Japanese.
