The MA in Theatre Arts allows each student to customize their degree based on personal interests and career objectives. Foundational courses cover essential topics like theatre history, theory, and dramatic literature, while diverse electives explore specialized areas such as youth theatre, creative drama, dramaturgy, directing, playwriting, and interdisciplinary studies with film and media. This program equips dramaturgs and teaching artists with valuable skills, offers professional growth opportunities for local educators, serves as personal enrichment for community members, and prepares students for advanced studies in MFA or PhD programs.
The MA Program doesn't feature specialized emphases. Instead, students engage with various academic courses that expand their global perspective on theatrical traditions, both historical and contemporary. While the curriculum focuses on academic study, students may also explore courses across the School of Theatre, Television, and Film, as well as other university departments. This degree serves as excellent preparation for either advanced academic pursuits or teaching careers. MA students frequently gain practical experience as dramaturgs in departmental productions, with specialized training offered through dedicated seminars. Teaching and assistant positions, typically available in the second year, provide additional professional development opportunities.
