The Master of Fine Arts in Art offers an interdisciplinary setting where students can cultivate their artistic careers. The School of Art features specialized spaces for printmaking, painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, textiles, digital media, ceramics, and emerging technologies. MFA candidates enjoy access to all school facilities along with dedicated individual and shared studio spaces. Our faculty consists of accomplished, practicing artists and art historians. Each student collaborates with a graduate advisor to tailor their journey through the program, which includes studio seminars, critiques, and personalized tutorials. Art history courses and academic seminars enhance studio work, while students strengthen their research and writing abilities to support their creative endeavors. Private studios are provided, along with teaching opportunities as assistants or instructors. A lively visiting artist program connects students with Bay Area and national artists, fostering local artistic networks. The MFA concludes with a written thesis and exhibition showcasing original work. Students can finish in 2 or 3 years, with this decision required before the first semester begins. Those opting for the accelerated 2-year track must pass their initial review without conditions and confirm their plan with the graduate coordinator.
