SDSU's ceramics program emphasizes harmonizing traditional craftsmanship with modern artistic concepts and current themes in the art world. Learners explore the complete spectrum of ceramic techniques while cultivating their unique artistic vision and ideas. Those pursuing ceramics can specialize in either sculptural works or functional pottery and vessel creation.
Each year, the program hosts various guest artists to facilitate diverse student interactions. Since ceramics is part of the Applied Design concentration (encompassing jewelry and metalsmithing, furniture and woodcraft, and textile arts), students are motivated to incorporate multiple mediums when suitable. The School of Art and Design provides undergraduate education culminating in a Bachelor of Arts in Art degree. This curriculum aims to deliver fundamental theoretical knowledge, technical skills, and creative development crucial for professional work and advanced studies in visual arts. Degree candidates benefit from committed faculty with wide-ranging expertise across ceramics, exhibition planning and curation, furniture design and woodworking, jewelry and metal arts, painting and printmaking, photography, sculpture, and community-focused art initiatives.
